In the Mood for Love (2000) — Riley Cross Reviews

A Tuesday Night of Slow-Burn Existentialism

Listen, I spent six years behind the purple felt counter at Blockbuster helping people rent movies they’d never watch, so I’ve seen every kind of judgment roll across your face when you bring a strange title to the check-out line. You tell me you want a 'Night In' that doesn’t require starting a takeout order at 8:30 PM. You want *In the Mood for Love*. It’s the movie Wong Kar-wai made when he got tired of wandering around Hong Kong and decided to make the city look like a Technicolor daydream full of regret.

This is strictly a movie for the hoodie-on, dim-lights phase of the evening. Do not invite people over for a drinks night unless your friends appreciate getting a history lesson while sitting in silence. The film follows two neighbors (played by a hauntingly intense Tony Leung and a ethereal Maggie Cheung) who suspect their spouses are cheating on them. Instead of confronting anyone, they form a closer bond through cigarettes, math problems, and walking fences to avoid passing each other's apartments—mentioning that specific hair-drying u-turn? That shouldn’t be spoiler territory, but I’ll leave the rest to the genius of the direction.

You get a vibe here that is thicker than humidity. The clothes are starched, the hair windswept, and the music—composed by Shigeru Umebayashi—plays so loudly in your chest that you can almost feel the cigarette smoke. It is best for when you’ve had a long week and just want to wallow in the kind of misery that feels beautiful. It makes the air in your apartment feel more expensive just by watching it.

Bottom line: This is the sonic equivalent of slow-dancing with a memory you can't quite reach.
